Last week I released my volumetric cloud rendering solution for Unity3D, kode80 Clouds. The response so far has been great and I can't wait to see what people do with them in their games.
Today the first update for kode80 Clouds is available. This update brings a much requested feature, ground shadows. By placing the kode80CloudShadows component on your scene's directional light, the geometry in your scene will receive raycast shadows from the clouds above. Shadows are rendered to Unity's screenspace shadow mask directly, so will work automatically with all materials that accept shadows.
The update also introduces an editor gizmo for visualizing the cloud's virtual skydome and atmosphere in the scene view, auto asset updating from within the editor, repositioning of the virtual skydome in your scene and various small bug fixes. The full change log is listed below.
- Added kode80CloudShadows component for raycast shadows from clouds to scene geometry
- Added AssetUpdater (Window/kode80/Check for Asset Updates)
- kode80Clouds now draws a gizmo for visualizing horizon/atmosphere size
- kode80Clouds' transform now affects virtual skydome position in scene
- Hardcoded input in demo's FlyCamera script (fixes Input Manager errors)
- Fixed Coverage Editor's brush position for all atmosphere sizes
- Fixed compile errors for < Unity 5.3.3
- Fixed lighting when project is set to Gamma
- Updated documentation
Available Now!
Rather than selling kode80 Clouds in the Unity3D Asset Store, I've decided to try something different. The project is hosted on GitHub & is free to use for non-commercial purposes.
If you'd like to use kode80 Clouds for commercial purposes, or support this & future kode80 development, commercial licenses are available for purchase from my new online store!

Bypassing the Asset Store allows me to offer kode80 Clouds under separate commercial & non-commercial licenses, spend time on development rather than bureaucracy & keep development open & public. However, it also removes the in-editor promotion that the Asset Store provides. If you like kode80 Clouds, I'd greatly appreciate you sharing it with others via Twitter, Facebook etc.
